About

Living with a mental health condition takes courage, day in and day out.

But society hasn't caught up to that reality. Mental illness is still gravely stigmatised and misunderstood.

It is well known that students are an at-risk group for poor mental health, often being in that vulnerable age range where mental health conditions first present. Education is also a crucial factor in future well-being. It is important that students be supported through such a demanding endeavour.

Each year students face significant mental health challenges and despite such difficult circumstances, continue learning.

This project was designed to honour them.

Why the Courage to Persevere?

Our Mission

The Courage to Persevere Project is committed to breaking down mental health stigma, changing the narrative around mental illness, and making meaningful change in the lives of those living with mental health conditions. We act upon this mission by:

  • Creating awards at institutions of higher learning, specifically geared to students persevering to complete their education, and

  • Honouring students by awarding funds with no-strings attached (i.e. they can use the funds for anything they deem most beneficial).

It is evident that students carry a burden with regard to their mental health. But no student is alone. They exist in larger communities of friends, colleagues, supervisors, teachers, institutions, and cultures. It is all of our responsibility to use our voices, and make a difference.

The Courage to Persevere Project exists to advocate for change, to empower those who have been disempowered, and to take purposeful action wherever possible. We want to celebrate mental health warriors for the courage they exhibit!

Thank you for joining us here.

The Courage to Persevere Project respectfully acknowledges that its founders are uninvited guests that live and work on the traditional and unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsépsəm (Esquimalt) Nations) and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples (MÁLEXEȽ – Malahat First Nation, BOḰEĆEN – Pauquachin First Nation, SȾÁ¸UTW̱ – Tsawout First Nation, W̱JOȽEȽP – Tsartlip First Nation, and W̱SÍḴEM – Tseycum First Nation).

We acknowledge with gratitude the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, whose historical relationships with these lands, waters, and communities continue to this day. We recognize the enduring presence and resilience of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples across what is now called Canada, and the ongoing impacts of colonization, forced displacement, and genocide. With humility, we commit ourselves to meaningful action in advancing reconciliation and to supporting the success and well-being of Indigenous learners in post-secondary education.
